But what do you need to get started with stand up paddleboarding? Here are the most important things you need:

- A SUP board: There are different variations, depending on whether you are on flat waters or the sea. Your skill level and intended use also play a role. An all-round SUP is slightly wider and enables an easy start to this sport. Touring or racing boards are narrower and longer, and thus much faster, but it is also harder to maintain balance. It is recommended to buy an inflatable board, as it is easy to transport and store.

- A paddle: The paddle should be about 20-30 cm longer than your height. There are differences in the material composition, with aluminum paddles being heavier than carbon paddles or paddles with carbon content. The heavier the paddle, the more strenuous it becomes. In addition, aluminum paddles can sink faster than lighter paddles.

- A leash: The leash is a safety line that connects the board to the paddler's leg. This way, you cannot be separated from the board in the event of a fall. A leash is especially important when you go paddleboarding in the sea.

- Proper clothing: Depending on the water temperature and weather conditions, you should dress appropriately. In summer, a swimsuit or bikini is often sufficient, while in spring or autumn, you should dress warmer or buy a wetsuit.

- Sunscreen and sunglasses: Especially important when you are on the water and exposed to the sun. A hat can also be advantageous.

- A pump: If you opt for an inflatable board, you need a pump to inflate the board. Tip: It's especially easy with an electric pump!

With these things, you are ready to start your SUP adventure! But before you start, you should consider a few tips:

Make sure you have enough space around you to not endanger other watercraft or swimmers.

Start on flat waters and calm conditions to find balance on the board.

Adjust the paddle's length so that you can easily enter the water without bending over.

Paddle with straight arms and use the power of your shoulders and core muscles.

Look forward and not at the board to maintain balance.
